Armed robbers have attacked the mini market of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and carted away food items.
The attack took place around 10:30pm on Monday.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that the attackers fired some shots into the air to scare the traders and students away from the market.
“They fired some shots into the air which made the marketers to abandon their shops and run away.
“They then carted away some beverages and other food items,” the Dean, Students Affairs, Professor Umar. Aliyu told the 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE.
Aliyu however, denied that it was a bandits’ attack, explaining that it was an armed robbery.
The spokesperson of the state Police Command, ASP Ahmad Rufa’I, said the attackers, numbering six injured two shop owners at the market, adding that normalcy has been restored in the campus.
The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security Matters, Colonel Ahmad Usman (rtd), believed it was a bandits.
“It Is a new tactic by them to instill fear in the minds of our people, because there is an ongoing military operation in the eastern part of the state and they are seriously feeling the heat.
“They are fleeing the area and have run out of food. That was the reason for the attack. To get food and also instill fear in the minds of our people but this would not deter our current efforts in tackling banditry in the state.”
