In modern society, the misuse of religion for personal gain has become a common occurrence especially by political actors, top government officials, wealthy individuals and or groups. Zamfara State, like many other northern states, has witnessed such acts, further exacerbating the socio-economic challenges faced by its residents.
The distortion of religion in Zamfara State is glaring, as the state has been exploited by numerous political figures over the last two decades.
The election of incumbent governor Dauda Lawal threw spanner into the handiwork of those using religion to siphon the state of its resources. Through his exemplary leadership, Dauda Lawal has been able to bring about positive changes that led to revamping the relationship between religion and governance in the state.
Governor Dauda Lawal’s unwavering commitment to combating the exploitation of religion for personal gain has rejuvenated hopes in Zamfara State. This essay explores his notable achievements, within a short period of time as the number one citizen of the state, such as reducing the number of state delegates to Hajj, streamlining religious affairs, launching a pilot feeding program for Almajiri schools, actively supporting weekly Islamic preaching sessions, the total renovation of Gusau orphanage house and other positive developments.
Despite facing opposition from real and wannabe political actors for his refusal to adhere to the long established exploitative practice, the governor continues to be who he has always been: a straightforward person with the zeal to make changes even in the midst of challenges. His refusal to conform to the expectations of those seeking to utilise religion as a tool for their self-interest has drawn criticism from some quarters but he keeps on tracks.
Among other things, the governor has succeeded in achieving the following in just three months:
1: Reduction of State Delegates to Hajj. One notable accomplishment of Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration is the decision to reduce the number of state delegates attending the Hajj pilgrimage. One pressing issue in the state is the plight of the Almajiri children—those who receive religious education but often lack basic necessities. Understanding the importance of addressing this challenge, Governor Dauda Lawal introduced a pilot feeding program for Almajiri schools. This initiative aims to provide regular meals to these children, promoting a holistic approach to their education and overall well-being. By bridging the gap between religious instruction and social welfare, Lawal has demonstrated a genuine commitment to improving the lives of the less privileged.
4. Attending and supporting weekly Islamic preaching:

The total renovation of an orphan house in gusau, alongside the construction of a new block of classrooms, not only speaks to the importance of providing a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children but also exemplifies the principles of compassion and social responsibility advocated by Islam.
In addition to that, Dauda Lawal has also identified 3 Tsangaya schools in all the senatorial zones, Gusau, kaura and Gummi that will be fully built and furnished to standard as part of given prominence to both Western and Islamic Education combined in the state.
