The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) said President Bola Tinubu has erred in embarking on major decisions before it even took its first faltering steps.
The Forum’s spokesperson, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, stated this on Monday, saying “Attempts to correct mistakes have not been very successful, and these have been made worse by the barrage of plans and policies being hinted at, which will make life even more intolerable for the Nigerian.
The Elders complained that millions of Nigerians were facing starvation and hardship and called on tinubu to act fast.
A similar call was made on Monday by the Catholic Bishops Conference that lamented that Nigeria was on the brink of collapse due to the suffering currently being experienced by Nigerians as a result of the fuel subsidy removal .
Like the NEF, the Bishops have tasked tinubu to act fast specifically to check corruption within the system.
The hard times has forced the Nigerian Labour Congress nlc and its Trade Union Congress TUC counterpart to declare industrial dispute nationwide.
The Labour is planning to go on protest on Wednesday August 2, as it has directed affiliates and state chapters to mobilise their members preparatory for the action.
Continuing, the NEF said it became necessary to speak especially at a time when the president was forming his cabinet so that Nigerians would see improvements in the manner decisions and plans of the administration were being handled.
“Where efforts have been made to correct mistakes, they appeared too hastily decided and will, in the long term, do little to relieve the desperate challenges of daily living of Nigerians.
“Next, the administration must hasten to provide relief to millions of Nigerians who are facing imminent starvation and total loss of any means to earn an honest living,” the forum said.
It said the fund being given to state governors for palliatives were unlikely to make the type of impact that should keep hungry and desperate population patiently waiting.
It told the president to respect the citizens and adopt flexible policies going forward.
The forum also urged Nigerians to be patient with the administration and avoid illegal actions that would worsen the current situation.
