An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday, sentenced a 28-year-old man, Victor Chinadu, to three years imprisonment for beating his mother and destroying her property worth N1 million.
The Magistrate, Mrs Folasade Hughes, said that Chinadu must serve the prison term at Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
The convict, an unemployed residing with his mother at 9, Guniness Street, Agege, Lagos, was tried for assault, damages and threat to life.
The magistrate said that the sentence was with hard labour and no option of fine.
She sentenced Chinadu to one year imprisonment for each of the three-count charge and ordered that the terms must run concurrently.
Hughes further ordered that a mental evaluation be carried out on the convict.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that that the convict had, on June 23, pleaded guilty to the three-count charge when he was first arraigned in court.
The Prosecutor, Insp Samuel Mishozunnu, had told the court that Chinadu committed the offences on June 22, following an argument with his mother, Madam Abigail Samuel.
He said that the convict beat up his mother and inflicted several injuries on her face.
The prosecutor further said that Chinadu destroyed a television set, a gas cooker, a fan, a refrigerator and a cell phone, all belonging to his mother.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 56, 173 and 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN)
