Didier Deschamps gave Kylian Mbappe the go-ahead to become the new captain of France, according to reports on Tuesday.
Hugo Lloris, who retired after the World Cup, was easily replaced by the Paris Saint-Germain forward. According to reports, Mbappe was informed of his selection by coach Deschamps over dinner on Monday, with Antoine Griezmann serving as vice-captain.
The revelation was not immediately confirmed by the French Football Federation, but it appears that the information is public. Mbappe will now serve as the team’s captain going into their Euro 2024 qualifying matches, which begin this week against the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland.
The Dutch will be his opponent in his debut match as captain on Friday at the Stade de France. The 24-year-old has 66 caps, 36 goals, and has been a member of the national team since his teens. He made his debut against Luxembourg when he was 18 years old.
Mbappe, a former Monaco player who won the World Cup in 2018, stood out significantly from the small pool of candidates for the captaincy.
