A strange case has been presented to police in the South African province of Limpopo after criminals took a body from a grave in Mokwakwaila and fled with it.
When one of the family members went to clean the grave site on Sunday in preparation for a ceremony to reveal the gravestone, she found that the grave had been tampered with.
Modike Philemon Masedi, the deceased, passed away on January 15 of last year and was buried seven days later. According to Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, spokesman for the SA Authorities Service (SAPS), the reason behind the incident is yet unknown while police look for suspects.
“Police were greeted by the peculiar sight of the violated grave having a hole and an open coffin with no corpse inside when they arrived at the scene.”A preliminary investigation carried out at the scene determined that the suspects entered the cemetery by hacking through the side gate.
Then they excavated a hole close to the grave, gained entry, and removed the body from the coffin. At this point, there is no known reason for the incident, Mojapelo stated on Tuesday. An investigation into grave vandalism and body theft was started by investigators in Mokwakwaila.
