Ihlas News Agency has reported that an explosion hit a gas pipeline in Türkiye’s southern province of Hatay after two strong earthquakes jolted the country early Monday.
BOTAS, Turkey’s state-owned energy firm, announced the suspension of natural gas flow to the provinces of Gaziantep, Hatay, and Kahramanmaras in the south.
According to Vice President Fuat Oktay, more than 280 people were killed in Turkey when two earthquakes devastated the country’s southern and southeastern provinces.
At 04:17 a 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the Pazarcik District in southern Kahramanmaras Province (0117 GMT).
At 04:26, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Gaziantep Province (0126 GMT).
The quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 7 kilometers, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority.
“We dispatched all of our search and rescue personnel to earthquake zones,” Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters.
We activated the highest level of alert.”
According to the minister, at least ten provinces were affected by the quakes.
The minister said that the quakes caused casualties in at least 10 provinces.
