The Federal Government has vowed to enforce the relevant sections of the Civil Aviation Act 2022 to prevent indiscriminate industrial actions by staff of aviation agencies.
The National Union of Air Transport Employees and Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, on Monday, embarked on a strike over wages, disrupting flight operations in the country.
Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who apologised to air travellers over the industrial action, while fielding questions from the media art the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday, said the federal government will enforce the section of the Civil Aviation Act (2022), disallowing employees from embarking on flight-crippling strikes in the future.
“First, we apologise to our teeming passengers in this difficult moment. There are other ways of channeling issues when they arise but they are not permitted to go on strike because aviation is an essential service,” the minister said.
While pointing out that the industrial action was “wrong, inhumane and against the law, Sirika said the law will be enforced because it prohibits industrial action and riots of such scale in the aviation sector.
