Memphis Depay has officially moved from Barcelona to Atletico Madrid.
The international player from the Netherlands has committed to the Civitas Metropolitano for 2.5 years after receiving approval to practise with Atletico on Thursday.
In exchange for a player whose contract was set to expire in July, Atletico will give Barca an upfront payment of €3 million, with the possibility of an increase to €4 million.
Prior to the 2021–22 season, Depay transferred for free from Lyon to Barcelona, reuniting with former Oranje player Ronald Koeman. However, Koeman was fired by the Blaugrana at the end of October 2021.
After being hired a week later, Xavi never seemed to have the same level of faith in Depay.
Only nine of his last 17 top-flight appearances came from the start after Xavi was hired, compared to his first 11 LaLiga starts in total.
The arrivals of Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Adama Traore in January 2022 hindered Depay.
While the latter two have since left, the preseason arrival of Raphinha increased competition for positions.
Depay only made two LaLiga games this season and none since September, as a result, and he is leaving. But Depay is an essential addition for Atletico.
While Matheus Cunha joined Wolves on a temporary contract that has allegedly already satisfied the requirements to be converted to a permanent agreement, Joao Felix left on loan to Chelsea.
