Women in Abia State henceforth can inherit property of their either their fathers or husbands, among others,
This is sequel to the signing into law the female inheritance bill by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, on Wednesday in Umuahia.
It would be recalled that the Abia State House of Assembly had passed the inheritance bill which grants Abia women to inherit and own properties in their father’s family.
The citation for the law is ‘The Female Persons Right of Inheritance of Property Law 2022’.
Ikpeazu congratulated Abia women on the feat, saying his administration would continue to support women.
He said the government in the state would lean on the side of reason and common sense in the discharge of its obligations to residents, noting that women would no longer be treated as second-class citizens even in their families.
Ikpeazu commended the state lawmakers for the courage to pass the bill, adding that the female inheritance bill is the most important legislation passed by the state house.
He further described the bill as historic, positively disruptive and capable of setting the society on a path of equal opportunities and sustainable development.
