The Bangladeshi government announced another eight dengue fever deaths on Tuesday, increasing the total number of fatalities in the country this year to 213 people.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), one person died in June, nine in July, eleven in August, 34 in September, 86 in October, and 72 in November.
The DGHS reported 9,911 dengue cases in September, 21,832 in October, and 11,968 in the first part of November.
Bangladeshi Health Minister Zahid Maleque stressed the need for strengthening preventive measures, saying controlling dengue was difficult without public awareness.
According to Zahid, when the weather changes owing to climate change, dengue outbreaks persist in the country amid occasional rains, complicating matters.
The bulk of reported cases this year happened in Dhaka, the capital.
A total of 692 fresh dengue cases, including 372 in Dhaka, were reported in 24 hours by 8:00 a.m. local time Tuesday.
Bangladesh has recorded 49,922 dengue cases and 46,928 recoveries this year.
In 2021, there were 28,429 dengue fever patients, with 105 deaths. (Xinhua/NAN)
