Five soldiers and an unidentified civilian were killed by gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday afternoon.
An eyewitness said the incident happened opposite Zenith Bank in Umunze between 1pm and 2pm in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The soldiers were on a surveillance when the gunmen shot them.
Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Ikenga Tochukwu, could not say if soldiers were killed but confirmed that there was shooting in Orumba.
“I cannot confirm if soldiers were killed, but can only confirm shooting along Umunze Road opposite Zenith Bank,” he said.
Ikenga said the command had deployed officers to the area to maintain peace and order.
