Gunmen on Tuesday attacked the Abayi Osisioma Ngwa divisional police station in Abia State, killing some of the operatives and setting the offices on fire.
An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and a police Corporal were killed during the attack.
The assailants numbering about 50, also carted away arms and ammunition from the station located along Umuojima/MCC Road, in Osisioma council area of Aba commercial town.
Residents said they started hearing sporadic gunshots at about 2:30 am, with many running for dear lives.
“We just heard gunshots and many ran into hiding; then the police station was in flame,” Onwubiko Godwin said.
He said the development created tension in the town with many shop owners refusing to open for business when the day breaks.
