Flood has ravaged both Adamawa and Plateau States killing 25 persons, injuring 58 and displacing 130,200 others.
In Adamawa, according to the state Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Sulieman Muhammad, heavy rainfall and the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon caused the death of 25 persons and displacing 130,000 people in 153 communities.
Muhammad explained that the flood rendered highways impassable to motorists and commuters, adding that the state was facing threat of food insecurity because of the loss of farm produce as flood waters ravaged 18 local government areas in the state.
He said “then, we have 58 persons who have sustained, different injuries, 153 communities across 18 local government areas of the state.”
According to Muhammad, the impact of the devastation caused by the floods would have exceeded the current fatality had it not been for timely sensitisation embarked upon by the state government to get communities lying flood prone plains to move to higher grounds.
He said council chairmen have diverted relief items released by the state government through his agency to mitigate the suffering of survivors displaced by floods.
In Plateau State, about 200 persons were displaced in some parts of Pilgani District, Langtang North LGA of Plateau State, following several days of heavy downpour in the state.
This was after flood sacked over 13 communities in the same and neighbouring Lantang South LGA
According to a Zamadede villager, Nantip Mallam, the flood has caused destruction to them, “everything we have in our house had been destroyed.”
Mallam revealed that more than 200 persons are currently displaced following the unfortunate incident.
Chairman, Langtang North LGA, Rimven Zulfa, said after the reports of the flooding in the communities were received, the necessary agencies were contacted to bring succour to the affected victims.
“We are still appealing to people living in flood-prone areas to please leave, as the danger of flooding is not yet over,” he said.
