Gombe State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Billiri local government following protest over the delay in the appointment of a new emir, Mai Tangale.
The former Mai Tangale, Dr Abdu Buba Mausharu, died on January 11, 2021.
The Secretary to the Government, Prof. Abubakar Njodi who announced the curfew said it was to ensure security and peace in the state.
“The government has suspended all rallies, meeting and social gathering in Billiri and all security agencies have been instructed to ensure compliance in the area,” he said.
Some women and children from Billiri and neighboring villages had blocked the Gombe- Yola roads for three days, protesting what they called the governor’s refusal to appoint a new Emir, Mai Tangale.
The road has caused heavy traffic congestion on the road leading to Taraba, Benue and other states.
The people of Billiri haved accused the governor of trying to appoint Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba as their new emir, whom they said is not the people’s choice.
The government is yet to comment on the allegation.
