Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, has retired from the agency.
This was disclosed by the spokesperson of the agency, Bisi Kazeem, in a statement on Monday.
Mr Oyeyemi retired after serving for eight years as FRSC chief executive.
He was appointed as Corps Marshal of FRSC by former President Goodluck Jonathan on July 23, 2014.
Controversy had dogged Oyeyemi’s tenure after he reached a mandatory retirement age of 60 years but refused to leave office.
Mr Oyeyemi had clocked the mandatory retirement age on November 26, 2020.
As provided in the Civil Service Rules, the FRSC Condition of Service pegs retirement age for officers like Oyeyemi at 60 years of age or 35 years of service.
He joined the services of the then newly created FRSC in 1988 as a career officer.
Mr Oyeyemi’s tenure was extended in 2018 by President Muhammadu Buhari when he had about two years to retire.
The reappointment of Mr Oyeyemi was in itself controversial as the Act establishing the FRSC makes provision for an only four-year tenure for commissioners in the FRSC, which includes the corps marshal.
