Senate President Ahmad Lawan will pick the All Progressives Congress (APC) expression of interest and nomination forms in the race for the presidency on Wednesday.
An aide who was not named told Daily Trust in an interview that arrangements have been concluded ahead of the formal declaration of the Senate President for the highest office.
“All things being equal, he would pick the expression of interest and nomination forms tomorrow. There is nothing wrong with a northerner to be aspiring to succeed President Buhari. The president would be happy to have a head of one of the arms of government succeed him.
“Let all the aspirants come out to test their popularity. What we all know is that Lawan is capable, experienced and can turn around the fortunes of the country positively. He is the candidate to beat,” he was quoted as saying.
There were reports on Monday that Lawan and some northerner stakeholders in the party would join the presidential race.
But Lawan, in an interview with State House Correspondents, said the reports were speculative.
He said such political ambitions remain secondary as they can only thrive when the country and the economy are stable.
He said, “If we stabilise our economy, we stabilise our country, then people can contest, but for now everything is speculative and I believe that God, in His infinite mercy, will show us the way.”
