The death toll in the three-storey building collapse in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State, ha reached 10. Among the fatalities are a National Youth Service Corps member simply identified as Oluwakemi and nine other tenants.
The building which collapsed on Sunday also injured 24 tenants.
The structure collapsed with many of the occupants indoors in around 9.30pm.
Some occupants escaped the collapsed structure, while others were trapped beneath the rubble.
Before the arrival of emergency responders, some members of the community searched the rubble and rescued the trapped victims.
The National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Lagos State Building Control Agency, police, and Red Cross were sighted at the scene of the incident on Monday.
The Coordinator, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, said four women and six men died in the building collapse.
The Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said those who died and the injured with severe injuries were taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
He said, “search and rescue were ongoing; 23 adults rescued alive and 10 bodies recovered.”
