A truck driver, Mohammed Gashua, has been shot dead on Saturday by a soldier in Gashua, headquarters of Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The incident triggered mass protest by youths who set up bonfires along the streets leading to Gashua Police Division.
Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has appealed for calm, saying the government would investigate the matter.
Witnesses said the truck driver was shot dead in a filling station after seeing military trucks and some officers riding on motorbikes.
He said motorists were scared by the mass movement of soldiers and they attempted to run but the security agents warned that they would shoot at anyone who moved an inch.
The deceased was shot dead while trying to leave the petrol station.
The driver was buried according to Islamic rites.
Governor Buni, in a statement by his spokesperson Mamman Mohammed, on Saturday “described the incident as unfortunate especially now that we are recording progress in sustainable peace across the state. Government and the security authorities would not tolerate any act of recklessness capable of disrupting our hard earned peace. I therefore assure you that government would properly investigate the matter and deal with it decisively.
“I also appeal to our good people of Bade local government area and the entire state to remain calm and law abiding.”
