At least 85,082 people are currently living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Taraba state.
Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Professor Joseph Albasu Kunini, disclosed this on Wednesday at an event in commemoration of this year’s World AIDS Day with the theme, “End Inequalities. End AIDS. End Pandemics.”
Kunini said only 40,762 HIV-positive persons in the state were on medication, leaving over 50 percent without access to medication.
He described the rate of infection in the state as “alarming and worrisome”, adding that the infection had been exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic.
“Without bold action against inequalities in access to treatment of HIV, the world risks missing the targets to end the spread of HIV by 2030, considering the negative and prolonged impact of COVID-19 pandemic,” Kunini said.
