The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Kano State Government to tender an apology to the former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, in two national dailies.
Justice Anwuli Chikere in his judgment on Tuesday held that Sanusi’s forceful banishment from the state after his dethronement was “illegal, unconstitutional and in gross violation of his fundamental human rights.” It, therefore, awarded damages against Kano state, in favour of the deposed emir, to the tune of N10million.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that Sanusi was deposed as emir by the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, on March 9, 2020, after being accused of insubordination.
After his dethronement, Sanusi was banished to Loko village in Nasarawa State and thereafter moved to Awe village, in the same state.
However, on March 13, 2020, the court ordered that Sanusi should be granted his freedom after he approached the court to challenge the legality of his confinement in Nasarawa state.
