The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, on Monday met with senior police officers at the Police Headquarters, Abuja, and briefed them on his impending retirement.
Some of the course mates of the IGP also attended the meeting.
Adamu attained the age of retirement of 35 years in service on Sunday. He enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force in 1986.
There is intensive lobbying by some Deputy Inspector-Generals of Police (DIGs) and Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIGs) to replace Adamu as the Police boss.
On Monday, the spokesperson to the President, Garba Shehu said the choice of who will succeed Adamu would be based on existing rule of the Police force and not ethnicity.
Since the Presidency is yet to announce the new IGP, Adamu will likely hand over to the most senior officer, in accordance with the civil service rule.
This means he is going to hand over to the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of operations, DIG Sanusi Lemu.
