Railway workers on Thursday paralysed activities at train stations across the country, following a 3-day warning strike by the Senior Staff Association of the Railway and the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NUR).
The union had on November 12 declared a three-day strike to demand increased wages.
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, engaged the leadership of the unions in a meeting a day after they issued the threat, but the meeting ended in deadlock.
However, reports from train stations across the country disclosed that the workers have shut down Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe, as well as the Lagos-Ogun intercity train services in Lagos.
Pictures seen by 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE showed railway workers, wielding placards with inscriptions such as “Good salaries bring better results, bad salaries kill morale,” marching on rail tracks at the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
The Abuja-Kaduna train service was equally grounded as commuters were seen returning back home, complaining that the strike had crippled all train activities.
They, however, urged the NRC management to further engage the unions to resolve the matter, in the interest of Nigerians.
