A 400 level student of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin, Salaudeen Waliu, says he assaulted his female lecturer, Mrs Rahmat Zakariyau, because she refused to wave off the mandatory Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) course that he missed.
Waliu, a 400 Level student, had on November 11 beat the lecturer to a coma.
Waliu said, “months before the last Thursday incident, he was arrested and locked up for two months, thereby warranting his inability to attend SIWES duties.”
He said he had gone to Allen Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos State, to meet a friend; and while waiting for him he decided to urinate near a car parked by drainage. Waliu said he was challenged by someone and accused of being a thief. But while he was about to explain himself, he said a mob descended on him, and was later handed him over to the police who detained him for two months.
When he returned to school after he was freed, he said he approached Mrs Zakariyau and explained his ordeal to her, but she said she can’t help him, except he joined the next set which means he will spend an extra year in the school.
He said on the fateful Thursday, ”I got angry, I don’t know what came over me, I started arguing and she told me to leave her office, I told her if I don’t leave, what is she going to do?
“She then threw a mug at me which injured me and I started beating her,” Waliu said.
“I dragged her out and she ran. I chased and kept beating her before people came. I tried to run but was later caught by the school security.”
Waliu was detained at the university’s security cell and later handed over to the Police.
He has been expelled from the university. The spokesperson of the university, Kunle Akogun, confirmed Waliyu’s expulsion in a statement on Tuesday.
