The African Union (AU) on Wednesday suspended Sudan, following a military takeover on Monday.
It said the country remained suspended “until the effective restoration of the civilian-led transitional authority”.
Sudanese General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan overthrew Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok government on Monday, ordered the dissolution of the government, and declared a state of emergency.
The action sparked international condemnation. The coup also sparked angry protests on the streets of Khartoum.
The coupists arrested and detained Hamdok and his ministers, but were later released under close guard.
A number of Western powers have called for an urgent meeting with Hamdok. They said they still recognise the prime minister and his cabinet as the constitutional leaders of Sudan.
