The Speakers Forum – the umbrella body of Speakers of 36 state Houses of Assembly – says Nigeria will find lasting solution to its security challenges if the Federal Government declares bandits and kidnappers as terrorists.
The forum said this in Katsina on Saturday as part of its resolution at the 2021 Third Quarter General Meeting of the Conference of the State Legislators of Nigeria.
The call came few days after Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai urged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare bandits as terrorists.
Chairman of the forum and Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman, while reading a communique at the end of the meeting, said the lawmakers resolved to work out legislative frame works to complement the efforts of the federal government to fight insecurity in the country.
He said the conference also resolved to make appropriate laws to address unemployment in the country, adding that called for financial autonomy for the legislature.
Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari who declared the conference open, urged the federal government to declare a State of Emergency on National security in order to bring an end to the loss of lives and property across the state.
