Steve Bruce has parted ways with Newcastle United by mutual consent 13 days after Saudi takeover of the club management.
Bruce took over from Rafael Benitez in July 2019 and has presided over his 1,000th game in managerial role when Newcastle lost 3-2 to Tottenham on Sunday.
Paulo Fonseca, a former Shakhtar Donetsk and Roma coach, is among the contenders to replace Bruce.
Despite keeping Newcastle in the Premier League for the past two seasons, Bruce proved to be a deeply unpopular successor to Benítez, with the team second bottom of the Premier League and still to win a game this season.
Bruce, who was previously in charge of Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Birmingham, Crystal Palace, Wigan, Sunderland, Hull and Sheffield Wednesday has indicated he regards this as the right moment to retire.
