Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, on Tuesday, declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2023.
Okupe, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is to vie for the country’s topmost seat on his party’s platform.
In a statement by his media office, the former presidential aide promised to run a government that would prioritised the needs of the poor and vulnerables.
He said his social contract is with “God and Nigerians” anchored on a seven-point agenda which include, reset, heal and reunite the nation; make the poor and needy the priority of government; end insecurity in two years; and increase revenue base with massive agricultural drive.
He said, “I believe I have the knowledge, the requisite national political experience and intellectual capacity and wisdom to halt the social and economic decadence, insecurity and pervasive poverty that
has nearly made living meaningless in Nigeria.
“I want to run a government which for the first time will make the life, wellbeing and safety of lives and properties especially of the Poor and needy a major priority.”
He promised to ensure that, “The wealth of the nation will be enjoyed by the nationals not multinationals, foreign contractors and elites in the country.”
He also pledged to overhaul the budgeting process to be more people oriented than that which the country ran year in year out for the last 60 odd years.
He said 30 percent of national budget from 2023 under his administration will be devoted fully towards social welfare of the Nigerian people, noting,
His administration, he said, would increase electricity generation to 30,000 megawatts in three years, while also promising to drastically reduce youth unemployment and re-engineer, revamp the national economy.
