Eight Premier League footballers will be stopped from representing their clubs this weekend after Brazilian football authorities asked FIFA to ban them.
Football365 reports that Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Leeds, and Everton all refused to release their players for World Cup qualifiers in South America as they would have to quarantine upon arrival back in England.
Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso and Christian Romero, and Villa stars Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia were allowed to travel to represent Argentina, but found themselves at the centre of controversy in Brazil on Sunday.
Reports say minutes into the qualifier, local police and health officials entered the playing area to detain the Premier League stars.
Local authorities had requested the deportation of the four players after they failed to comply with quarantine regulations upon arrival in Brazil.
The rules state that an individual coming from the UK must be isolated for 14 days upon arrival.
But the Brazilian players who were all prevented from travelling – Alisson, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus, Thiago Silva, Fred, Raphinha and Richarlison – will now face a five-day ban from FIFA.
