Katsina Police Command has arrested four officers of the Nigerian Customs Services for firing at the official vehicle of the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Yau Umar Gwajo Gwajo.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports on Tuesday how the officers shot at the vehicle in Muduru village few kilometers from Katsina city.
A top source at the Police Command told this reporter that the four Customs officers couldn’t defend themselves when the commissioner reported the matter to the police.
“We like the way the Commissioner handled the issue. He came here and reported the case. The said customs officers couldn’t respond to the charges against them,” the police source told this newspaper.
He said the officers were not stationed on the Daura road where the incident occurred, but on Kaita road.
“The Assistant Commissioner was particularly angry that the officers shot the vehicle on Daura road which their bosses confirmed was not their station. So, if they were asked to man Kaita road, which directly takes one to Niger Republic, what took them to Muduru on Daura road?” He said
The public relations officer of the Ministry, Abdurahman Sama’ila, said the commissioner’s vehicle was attacked “ferociously” even though he was already trying to park when they flagged him down.
“We’re still at loss as to why they decided to open fire. Three of them shot at the vehicle at the same time and their only excuse was that they were working on intelligence. But the commissioner’s driver was already parking when they started shooting,” he said.
Danbaba Isa, the customs spokesperson in the state, told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE that the service will conduct a press briefing on the issue later.
