The Special Investigation Panel instituted to probe the former Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari, has submitted its report to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE gathered that the four-man panel headed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Joseph Egbunike, submitted its findings to the IG on Monday.
The IGP had on August 1 instituted a probe into the alleged involvement of Kyari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, in a $1.1m Internet fraud allegedly perpetrated by an international fraudster, Abbas Ramon, popularly known as Hushpuppi, and four others.
United States District Court for the Central District of California had in a statement on July 26 ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to arrest Kyari after he was indicted by Hushpuppi to have received a from him to arrest and jail an estranged ‘co-conspirator,’ Chibuzo Vincent, after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on Qatari businesspeople.
Hushpuppi, 37, had pleaded guilty to wire fraud and felony, amongst others, in the US, and according to the FBI, Messrs. Abbas and Kyari were buddies and were both involved in a money-laundering scheme.
Hushpuppi risks 20 years’ imprisonment and other penalties if convicted.
Though Kyari denied the allegation, the IGP ordered a probe into the allegation, leading to his (Kyari’s) subsequent suspension and replacement as Head of IRT by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu.
