Members of the Kogi State House of Assembly are idle and not conversant with their primary responsibility, the executive director of Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, Idris Miliki Abdul, has said.
The civil society chief is reacting to the campaign tour of some states by the state lawmakers canvassing support for the presidential ambition of the state governor, Yahaya Bello.
“What is happening in the state legislature is a product of idle minds. These are people who don’t have anything or much to do,” Abdul said.
The legislators have visited Plateau, Ebonyi and Niger states, where they pleaded with their colleagues to support the presidential ambition of Governor Bello in 2023.
In his reaction, chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Muktar Attimah, said the state government neither provides social amenities nor pay salaries, adding that the lawmaker instead did nothing about it.
He said the lawmakers’ action further confirmed that Kogi “is not a serious state.” Attimah said.
However, the speaker of Kogi assembly, Prince Mathew Kolawole, said he is personally bankrolling the tours and that no constitutional provision stops the legislature from supporting the governor’s political ambition.
