The British High Commission on Wednesday says it will engage the Nigerian Government over the re-arrest of the leader of the outlawed seccenists Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Spokesperson of the British High Commission, Dean Hurlock, said the commission is “in the process of seeking clarification” from the federal government over Kanu’s rearrest.
Kanu who has a British passport was arrested and extradited to Nigeria on Sunday. He had jumped bail in 2017 before he was rearrested on Sunday.
He was brought back to Nigeria to continue his trial before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on charges bordering on treasonable felony, due to his campaign for the secession of Republic of Biafra.
Hurlock said the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office “stands ready to provide consular assistance.”
He said the UK “would expect any trial or legal proceedings to follow due process” as Kanu’s prosecution resumes.
Kanu will appear in court in July 26.
