British Government says the leader of the proscribed secessionist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was not arrested and extradited from the United Kingdom where he resided.
Kanu who is also a UK citizen, had been in the UK since he jumped bail in 2017 during his trial at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Justice Minister Abubakar Malami had told journalists at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday that Kanu was picked up on Sunday following “the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services”, but didn’t disclose from which country he was picked up.
Spokesperson of the British High Commission to Nigeria, Dean Hurlock, said in a text message, “We can confirm that Nnamdi Kanu was not arrested in the UK for extradition purposes.”
Kanu was first arrested on October 14, 2015 following years of his campaign for the sovereign state of Biafra.
