Eight married women were said to be among the dead after a boat accident that occurred on Thursday in Shagari local government area of Sokoto State.
There were 13 people aboard the boat when it capsized and killed all of them.
Among the victims were three children and two elderly men.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that the incident occurred a few days after 92 persons died in another boat mishap in neighbouring Kebbi state.
The cause of the incident could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
But the chairman of the local government area, Aliyu Shagari, said it could be caused by either a strong wind or overloading.
Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal visited the area to condole with families of the victims.
“The governor also promised to provide us with motorized boats and live jackets,” the chairman said.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, described the deaths as very shocking and saddening.
