Managing Director of Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr George Moghalu on Thursday appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to vacate some police officials illegally occupying some of the organization’s premises at Onitsha Area Office, in Anambra State, to enable the authority make better use of the place.
Moghalu who made the appeal when he paid the IGP a courtesy visit at the Force headquarters, Abuja, said the premise was by law under NIWA’s right of way.
Moghalu also sought the help of the Police boss in providing security for the second test-run of cargo shipments from Lagos to Onitsha River Port, which was aimed at decongesting the ports in Lagos State.
He also appealed for more cooperation in some areas of challenges facing the Authority, such as lack of gun boats, accoutrement and anti-riot equipment.
In his response, the IGP said there had been a cordial relationship between the police and NIWA in securing inland ports, adding that though it is difficult to secure gunboats for the authority, the police will continue to support the operation of the marine police.
