President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said he would shock those who are bent on undermining his administration through insurrection and other means.
The president said daily security reports on the spate of attacks in the country were pointers that certain elements want his administration to fail at all cost.
A statement by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the president said his principal stated this after he received briefing from Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, on series of attacks on facilities of the electoral body round the country.
“Insecurity in Nigeria is now mentioned all over the world. All the people who want power, whoever they are, you wonder what they really want. Whoever wants the destruction of the system will soon have the shock of their lives. We’ve given them enough time,” the president said.
Buhari stated that his victory at elections showed the level of his acceptability by Nigerians, while promising to continue leading the country in accordance with Constitutional provisions.
He vowed to come down hard sooner than later on those angling for the break up of the country and beating the drums of war.
The president promised to give INEC all assistance it required to operate in order to foreclose any speculations over a third term bid or excuse for failure.
The statement quoted INEC chairman as saying that the pattern and frequency of recent attacks on its facilities appeared to be targeted at future elections.
“The intention is to incapacitate the Commission, undermine the nation’s democracy and precipitate a national crisis,” he was quoted as saying.
