Dangote Group and MTN have retained their status as the most admired African brands in 2021, despite the effect of COVID-19 pandemic.
This was revealed in a Brand Africa survey, during the 11th edition of the 100 top Africa Brands 2021, hosted virtually by Brand Africa, Publics Africa, and Uganda Investment Authority, which measured this year’s ranking on the effect of COVID-19 pandemic.
The survey sought to understand which brands were perceived to have been helpful during the pandemic.
While WHO and MTN top the list of brands recognized as most helpful during the COVD -19 pandemic, Dangote Group retained its status as the most admired African brands recalled spontaneously and when prompted, respectively.
The survey also revealed that African brands retain 13 percent share in 2021, and despite an increase in sample size and countries, the top 10 Most Admired Brands show little change from previous years.
“MTN, consistently the only African brand among the Top 10 brands overall, dropped to 11th for the first time in a decade. American sports and fitness giant, Nike, retains the top spot for the fourth
year in a row. MTN and Dangote retain their status as the most admired African brands,” the hosts said.
It said even as COVID-19 limited entertainment options beyond the house, many digital businesses, such as streaming service strived, explaining why South Africa’s DSTV displaced BBC from its long-held position as the most admired media brand in Africa.
Leading African countries that dominate the rankings largely retained their positions with Nigeria and South Africa having five 5 brands each, while Ethiopia and Kenya accounting for the 13 brands among the Top 100 most admired brands in Africa.
