The Zamfara government has approved the establishment of Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) departments in the 14 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
The Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Yusuf, announced this in Gusau on Wednesday at a two-day stakeholders meeting on the domestication of the National Action Plan on WASH.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the stakeholders meeting was organized by the State Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene programme with technical support from UNICEF, Sokoto Field Office.
According to the director, the ministry is currently working in partnership with the State Local Government Service Commission to ensure effective deployment of skilled personnel to oversee the management of the WASH departments to be established.
“The new WASH departments to be established are expected to begin full operations before the end of June this year.
“This remarkable achievement is a testament to the hard work of the UNICEF team, reflecting the state and UNICEF collective commitment to the sustainability of WASH programming in Zamfara State.
“I want to reaffirm the state government’s commitment to improve WASH programmes across the 14 LGAs of the state,” Yusuf said.
He commended UNICEF over its technical support and advocacy engagement with the state government towards promoting WASH sector in the state.
