In a region where economic hardships and historical marginalization converge, the people of Northern Nigeria are often the primary targets of political manipulation. These politicians often try to convince citizens to give up their freedoms for quick money or empty promises that won’t last long.
As Dante Alighieri famously said, “The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.” This quote reminds us that we need to speak up and think critically when we see political tricks. By understanding what these tricks are, we can protect our rights and stand up for our freedoms.
In Nigerian politics, it is alarming to reveal how politicians sway voters with subtle tricks. They often take advantage of people’s financial struggles by offering bribes, short-term rewards, and emotional appeals to sway their votes.
Using 2023 elections as a case study, Nigerian politicians resorted to using food items like spaghetti and rice as bribes to gain votes. This tactic was particularly effective in impoverished areas where many families were struggling to make ends meet, creating a situation where needy citizens felt compelled to choose immediate relief over the long-term benefits of good governance.
Religion and ethnicity have also been a powerful weapon of political manipulation in Nigeria. Politicians often exploit religious and ethnic divisions to secure votes by invoking sentiments that resonate deeply with the people. For example, during election periods, candidates may appeal to their base by framing themselves as defenders of a particular faith or ethnic group, often portraying rival candidates as threats to their cultural or religious identity.
They also create fear and anger by exaggerating threats and pushing the idea that everyone needs to vote now to be part of something important.
They also try to make people feel good about voting, as if it’s a brave and patriotic act. By recognizing these tactics, the people can overcome emotional manipulation and make choices that reflect their true beliefs.
In fact, Nigerian politicians have skillfully turned the basic needs of the populace into bargaining chips for political gain. Such practices not only undermine the electoral process but also exploit the vulnerabilities of the people, particularly in impoverished communities where survival is a daily struggle.
As we engage in the democratic process, it’s troubling to know that our emotions are being easily manipulated. Some politicians play on our deepest fears and worries, creating stories that resonate with us but may not be true.
They want us to believe that their way is the only solution. However, this is just a façade built on lies that could easily collapse. By seeing through these manipulations, the people of Nigeria can protect themselves from political influence, leading to a more informed and powerful citizenry.
The time has come for the people of Northern Nigeria to awaken, rise, and reclaim their freedoms. We must recognize the tricks used by politicians and refuse to let them buy our silence, complicity or if you like our conscience.
Let’s demand honesty, responsibility, and integrity from our leaders. We should educate ourselves, our families, and our communities about the importance of critical thinking, understanding the media, and being active citizens.
Together, we can build a movement that values freedom, justice, and equality over short-term gains and false promises. We owe this to ourselves, our children, and future generations.
