Ijaw women of Kalabari extraction on Saturday took to streets to protest against FCT Minister Nyesom Wike who has been locked in power tussle with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The angry women destroyed giant billboards with the pictures of Wike.
The billboards were set up at the junction leading to Abalama to honour Wike, who is being hosted to a grand reception by the Ijaw stakeholders under the platform of NEW Associates.
The reception comes amid protest from traditional rulers and people of Kalabari over a scheduled IYC Eastern zone meeting at the same venue.
The women, dressed in black attire with white scarf, came out early in the morning of Saturday, blocked the road leading to Abalama with the intention of denying the Minister access to the community.
The protesting women carried placards reading “Kalabari take your stand now!”, “Wike, what do you want in Kalabari land?”
However, security details accompanying Wike dispersed the protesting women
The Ijaw stakeholders is hosting the Minister to a reception.
The Chairman, Publicity Committee of the grand reception, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, said chiefs, leaders, women and youths were happy with Wike, whom he described as a friend of the kingdom, which was why he is visiting Kalabari.
George said the event was arranged at Abalama as a thanksgiving service and a grand civic reception in honour of the former governor for his love for the Kalabari Kingdom.
