Six patients diagnosed with diphtheria have been admitted to Rigasa General Hospital in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, with one in critical condition requiring oxygen support.
Hospital officials confirmed that this is the first time such a high number of diphtheria cases have been admitted simultaneously, raising concerns within the community.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Austin Otoghile, said while the situation is unusual, it is under control.
“We have six diphtheria patients on admission, with one under oxygen. Previously, we would have one or two cases at a time, and at most, three or four. However, this sudden increase is being managed effectively.”
Dr. Austin noted that officials from the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Health Secretary of Igabi LGA had visited the hospital on Tuesday to assess the situation.
“The state ministry has supplied us with six oxygen cylinders and all the necessary consumables,” he added.
Despite these efforts, he expressed concern over the community’s reluctance to seek medical care early.
He said their biggest challenge is that people delay bringing their sick relatives to the hospital until the condition becomes critical.
Kaduna State Commissioner for Health, Umma K. Ahmed assured that a Rapid Response Team was actively managing the situation.
She also confirmed that six filled oxygen cylinders had been provided to the hospital to ensure uninterrupted treatment for the patients.
