A new health initiative supporting Women’s Increased Access to Family Planning Through Pharmacies, Patent and Proprietary Medicines Vendors (SWIFT) in Kano state aimed at addressing the high burden of maternal mortality in the state, has revealed that under the new initiative 400 female patent medicine vendors would be empowered to provide child spacing services.
In his address during the inaugural ceremony of the project, the commissioner for health Dr Abubukar Labaran Yusuf represented the permanent secretary of the ministry pharm. Aminu Bashir, stated that the idea of empowering women to access child spacing services is a multi-sector approach to addressing maternal health.
“In Kano State we have a high burden of maternal mortality rate and so we need a multi sector approach to crash maternal deaths. Empowering women to provide child spacing services will increase service delivery because most of the women are confident to discuss their health problems with their fellow women than with men,” the commissioner said.
Similarly, in his speech District Head of Gezawa Local government and Mai Unguwar Mundubawa of Kano Alhaji Muhammad Aminu Yusuf, who represented the Kano emirate at the SWIFT stakeholders inception meeting ,said the emirate, through its committee on health, is committed and dedicated to improved healthcare delivery in the state.
“Emir Muhammad Sanusi has promised his total support and he is committed to any program that is aimed at improving maternal health in rural and urban areas,” the traditional ruler told the gathering.
