The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other key stakeholders, has successfully facilitated the voluntary return of 140 stranded Nigerian migrants from Sudan.
The returnees arrived at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, at approximately 5:18 p.m on Thursday. The coordinated reception exercise was led by the NCFRMI, with support from the IOM and participation from various government agencies and humanitarian organizations. The group of returnees included 34 male and 54 female adults, 17 male and 22 female children, as well as 6 male Infants and 7 Female infants.
Addressing the returnees on behalf of the Federal Commissioner during the reception at the Immigration Training School in Kano, the NCFRMI Kano Field Coordinator, Lubah Liman, stated that, the exercise marks the first batch of returnees from Sudan and the fifth of such operation from 2024 to 2025.
She added that In line with the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to the voluntary repatriation and reintegration of stranded Nigerians, the Honourable Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, Tijjani Ahmed, has spearheaded a series of return exercises from Niger Republic and Sudan. As of 2024 and 2025, a total of 1,412 migrants have been successfully repatriated under this initiative.
Liman also highlighted that, upon arrival, the returnees underwent registration and profiling by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to ensure accurate documentation. She commended the collaborative efforts of all participating agencies, acknowledging their role in the smooth execution of the operation.
