Security details of the impeached Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa have been restored but those of incumbent Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.
Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025 and Meranda who was his deputy was immediately elected as Speaker unanimously
Meranda was Obasa’s deputy before the impeachment. After his removal, the house elected Meranda, making her the first female to occupy the position in the history of the state.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE learnt that major stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders intervened in the crisis rocking the House of Assembly, thus preparing ground for Obasa’s return.
However, Meranda was yet to step down as Speaker.
Former National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor of Osun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Muiz Banire and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and some of the lawmakers reportedly met over the weekend to decide the fate of Meranda as she was told to step down from the Speakership of the House.
It was learnt that following the resolutions reached by the leaders, Obasa would likely return to his position as Speaker. Though no date has been fixed, but it was learnt that any moment from now, Obasa would be asked to return to take control of the Assembly.
A competent source seeking anonymity said “In truth, what they said was that Obasa’s removal was illegal and the lawmakers were directed at the meeting to go and return him.”
It was not clear yet when the House would reconvene to effect the expected changes.
A commotion in the House two weeks ago as a result of invasion by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), forced Meranda to adjourn plenary indefinitely.
