Over 82 tonnes of adulterated sesame worth over N180 million at Dawanau International Grain Market has been seized by the Kano state government in its move to protect the integrity of the international market.
Addressing the marketers during a visit to the market, the Commissioner for Commerce, Investment, and Industry, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling food adulteration and preserving Kano’s reputation in the global commodity trade market.
The commissioner confirmed that the government had received reports of widespread adulterated food commodities adding that the state government is collaborating with market associations and the Consumer Protection Agency to inspect, confiscate, and investigate affected goods.
He further emphasized the critical role of Dawanau Market in the nation’s food security and international trade, warning that the government would not tolerate individuals compromising the quality of agricultural exports.
“Anyone caught engaging in this act will be prosecuted and punished accordingly,” he warned. This disturbing practice contradicts our social and religious values. We will deal decisively with offenders,” Sagagi stated.
The chairman of the Dawanau Market Association, Alhaji Mukhtar Isa, expressed gratitude for the government’s action in restoring the good virtues of the market adding that the association will continue to cooperate with the state government un fishing out bag eggs from the market.
