Thirty out of the 40 people abducted by bandits early Monday morning at a mosque in Jibia town, Katsina State, have been recused, the police have said.
The police spokesperson, Gambo Isa, said operatives and some members confronted the gunmen, which led to the rescue of 30 of the abductees, while the remaining 10 were still in the bandits’ captivity.
He said the bandits were suspected to be from Dumburum forest in the Zurmi local government area of Zamfara state.
However, residents of the town said some of the victims were rescued by the residents and vigilante, while some returned on their own in the morning.
“I can tell you that the policemen were there but those rescued were actually saved by vigilante members and some of us,” a resident, Almustapha Danye Jibia told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE.
“Some of those being counted as among those rescued were scared away
by the shootout, and they returned this morning by themselves.”
