Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has renamed the State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, after the renowned Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Abdullahi Fodio.
This was revealed during the Sheikh Abdullahi Fodio Annual Public Lecture, part of the Gwandu Emirate International Horse Racing and Cultural Festival’s week-long celebrations.
Governor Idris, “This is in order to keep the name for the younger ones.”
He emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of prominent historical figures who have significantly contributed to education and societal development.
Sheikh Abdullahi Fodio, a brother and close ally of Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio, played a crucial role in advancing knowledge, reform, and leadership during his era.
The renaming of the university is expected to inspire students and the academic community to emulate the virtues of scholarship and moral excellence embodied by Sheikh Abdullahi Fodio.
Governor Idris pledged that the annual lecture would be sustained by the State Government, emphasizing the importance of supporting the four emirates in the state to preserve their cultural heritage.
In his remarks, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, commended Kebbi State for its unique and unified approach to politics, urging Sokoto State to emulate it.
He praised the presence of three former Kebbi governors alongside the current governor, describing it as a remarkable display of unity beyond political differences.
The event featured lectures by Professor Bello Daudun Bada, Sheikh Muhammad Isah Talata Mafara, and Professor Ja’afar Makau Kaura.
Goodwill messages were delivered by former Governors of Kebbi State, including Senator Adamu Muhammad Aliero, Dr. Saidu Usman Dakingari, and Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who is also the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning.
