Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to address cases of injustice in the country to douse the pervasive insecurity, especially in the Southeastern part of the country.
The governor said the recent attacks on security personnel and infrastructure in the Southeast could be linked to people who are unhappy with government institutions and law enforcement agencies over perceived injustice.
Ikpeazu who was speaking with journalists in Aba, cautioned against sweeping what he termed “smoldering fire” under the carpet, saying the fire will still burn if it is not put out.
He said more than ever before, now was the time to be courageous and address perceived injustice and imbalances in the country’s federal structure.
The south east part of the country has witnessed a plethora of attacks on security men and their offices by separatist group, IPOB, in recent weeks.
The governor, however, pointed out that Abia state in particular has remained peaceful, with no case of bank robbery, for instance, since 2015, until recently, when people who are aggrieved with the current structure and feel it cannot respond to their yearnings, decided to take up arms.
He attributed the peaceful state of affairs in the state to intelligence gathering using the people who reside in communities and advocacy through traditional and religious institutions.
