The Sokoto State Government has said it would sell rice and other essential commodities to residents at 55 per cent subsidy.
It would be recalled that the state government had approved N14 billion for the purchase of rice and other items which were to be sold to the people of the state at a very subsidized rate.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu announced this during the inauguration of the state and local government committees for the sale of the commodities.
He said the gesture was to cushion the current hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy in the country, adding that the food items were meant for every family in the 244 wards in the state.
Aliyu warned the committees to do their assignment devoid of any political, ethnic and religious consideration.
“Make sure every family has free access to these items no matter which political party or religion they belong to as far as they reside in Sokoto state,” he said, adding that the initiative would be sustained until the economic situation in the country improved.
He called on wealthy individuals and corporate bodies to complement the government efforts just as he admonished religious leaders to preach to their subjects for them to be generous to one another.
The governor noted that members of the committees who were drawn from academia, EFCC, ICPC security agencies, politicians among others were selected based on their track records.
Speaking on behalf of the committees, the State Coordinator and former deputy Governor, Alhaji Chiso Dattijo assured the governor that they would work assiduously to achieve the set goal.
He appealed for support from the people of the state for the committees to succeed in their assignments.
